Getting motivated to lose weight doesn’t work the same for everyone; it’s very personal. A lot of weight loss candidates say there was a defining time that encouraged them to get rid of the weight. I have thought of different methods to spark your motivation for weight loss.
These are a few of the strategies that have been known to work well.
A future event: This could be something like a wedding, reunion or my personal favorite; going on vacation. Through the years I noticed that I actually care if I am embarrassed about what I weigh for the occasion. I would prefer death rather than be seen overweight in a bathing suit when I go on vacation at the beach.
Weight loss competitions: I don’t want to lose anything (besides weight). The competition must include someone I don’t like or a rival against me. If just friends are included, I will say hooray for them but I will eat cookies secretly.
Clothing can also be a motivating factor: Choose or purchase clothes that you want to fit (and possibly could). Hang it in the location that you exercise, weight yourself or the room you eat in. Imagine yourself with it on. You might have to change outfits every now and then. This encouragement can just become a natural occurrence with time.
Put your old clothes back on: I am frequently surprised at the size I was before and could become once more. Being big feels comfortable and normal when you have been justifying it to yourself for a long time. A few of my smaller sizes are similar to kid’s size clothes when compared to the size I wear now. Put them on and remember “I could fit into this before and I could again”.
Graphs and Charts: I am fascinated with an excellent chart. I use Excel to make them by putting the days above and the weight on the side. Using this method, you will notice that you are losing. You will also notice that occasionally you will put on a few pounds before you start losing again. It allows making the struggles of weight loss seem easier to handle. Also I create a work out routine using a calendar that I tape to the weight loss graph. By seeing the results on the graph beside the workout schedule, the cause and effect relationship is highlighted.
It’s very helpful to put down in black and white your reasons for wanting to lose weight, so write them down on paper. Even jot down the silly reasons; sometimes these mean the most. Don’t set yourself up for defeat by choosing unrealistic goals.
Turn past rejections around. Perhaps a past partner being jealous will motivate you. It makes no difference if you don’t want to get involved with them again. Just consider this thought about how much they will dislike themselves for letting you go when they look at you again. Or if this is more effective for you, consider how they will feel when they see your overweight self and they are happy they are not with you now. Anybody that you don’t like or who you are a rival against will work. Specifically if they desire to lose weight also. Just imagine how envious they will be when you show them what you can do.
There are myriads of techniques to get you motivated and hopefully at least some of those mentioned here will help you. Remember you can accomplish this, and each day you make the effort, you are nearer your goal. Now it’s time to mentally pick someone you don’t like and then work towards making them jealous.
